Ferguson hoping to clinch major signing

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that Manchester United have made a bid for a player and expects at least one arrival at Old Trafford this summer.

The United manager refused to reveal the name of the player he is after, but recent media reports have suggested that the club have had a £20 million plus bid for Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov rejected.

"We have made a bid for one player who would enhance us a great deal," said Ferguson, who had only Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez available to him last season, with Louis Saha injured for much of the campaign.

"I have replaced Gerard Pique with Jonny Evans, so we are back to the same numbers. If we got one more it would strengthen us even further."

Ferguson also revealed that the tendinitis problem which led Owen Hargreaves to miss pre-season last season and the start of the season, has resurfaced. The England midfielder stayed in Manchester while the rest of the United squad travelled to South Africafor a pre-season tour.

United will already be without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo for up to three months of the start of the season, but Ferguson insisted that he hasn't ruled Hargreaves out for the start of the season and was "sure he will be OK".

There was better news for club captain Gary Neville, who flew with the squad to South Africa after he played 45 minutes in a pre-season friendly against Aberdeen.
