Man arrested over 'school nail bomb'

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a nail bomb attack at a Catholic boys' school in Liverpool earlier this month.

Merseyside police said the man was detained yesterday in Huyton on suspicion of causing an explosion.

No one was injured in the September 21st attack outside St Edward's College, Sandfield Park, which police officially say was caused by an "improvised firework device" detonated inside a silver Nissan Micra.

Merseyside police had appealed for anyone who may have seen two men in the vicinity of the primary school to come forward.

One man was described as white, between 5ft 9in and 5ft 10in tall and aged between 40 and 50 with a stocky build and light coloured or ginger hair.

The force's Superintendent Ian Pilling condemned the incident.

"This was a despicable and dangerous act; fortunately no one was injured. We need help from members of the public to bring the offenders to justice," he commented.

"The incident happened shortly before the children were due to leave school and this could have resulted in serious injury, or possibly fatality. This was a reckless attack on a school grounds… [and] we are determined to catch those responsible."
